Welcome to the Junior League of Washington. The Junior League of Washington (JLW) is made up of more than 2,200 highly trained volunteers dedicated to improving the community through effective action and leadership. The JLW makes a difference by supporting adult, children's, and cultural literacy initiatives in the greater Washington, DC area through hands-on volunteering and fundraising efforts that support the important work of our community partners. The JLW's purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. All women regardless of race, religion, and national origin who are committed to volunteerism in their community are welcome and encouraged to join the JLW.
Junior League of Washington Announces 2008 Meg Graham Scholarship Winner: Ivory ShermanThe Junior League of Washington has announced that Ivory Sherman is the 2008 Meg Graham Scholarship winner. Ms. Sherman will receive a $10,000 scholarship towards her college education. She will attend Syracuse University in the fall, a student of the Newhouse School of Public Communications, where she plans to major in broadcast journalism. During her high school career, Ms. Sherman accumulated 468 hours of community service. Her main volunteer activity was taking part in 2kNation -- a youth-run radio program for students in grades 9-12 in the DC metropolitan area. She hosted a radio show every Sunday that shed a positive light on issues that affect African -Americans, covering various topics from teen pregnancy to dietary issues. "The Junior League is honored to have such a shining example of volunteer commitment from a DC high school student as this year's Meg Graham Scholarship winner. She embodies everything that the Junior League and our mission of providing trained volunteers and leaders to the community is all about", says President of the Junior League, Diana Marousek. This year, the Junior League of Washington celebrated its 25th year of the Meg Graham Scholarship, promoting academic excellence and volunteer service within the District of Columbia school system. The scholarship honors the late Reverend Margaret M. Graham, a past president of the Association of Junior Leagues International, former Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown, co-founder of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, and a long-time member of the Junior League of Washington. The Meg Graham Scholarship honors her inspiring legacy of leadership and volunteer service.

National Book Festival, September 27Four hundred Junior League of Washington volunteers will join First Lady Laura Bush to promote literacy at the 2008 National Book Festival on Saturday, September 27, on the National Mall. The event, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress, is free and open to the public. More than 120,000 children and their parents attend this annual event, featuring authors and celebrating the joy of lifetime reading. This will be the sixth year the JLW has demonstrated its commitment to literacy through its support of the National Book Festival. Learn more about this event at http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/.

As the largest annual fundraiser for the Junior League of Washington (JLW), the revenues raised during A Capital Collection of Holiday Shops are used to fund the JLW's community-based activities, which focus volunteer resources and grant dollars on the complex issue of literacy in the Washington area.
