JLW Kicks Off 2021’s Kids in the Kitchen

Each year, the Junior League of Washington hosts a spring Kids in the Kitchen event for the Washington, DC community that showcases ways kids can eat smart and make healthy choices. Due to the pandemic, our event looks a little different this year. While we are saddened we can’t be with you in person, we are excited to bring you these virtual activities on demand.

Over the next few weeks we’ll bring you a four part series including activities about nutrition, cooking, and exercise that are educational and fun. We’ve also created this Recipe Book to follow along with us through our time together.

First up in our series… Nuts About Nutrition.

Part 1: Nuts About Nutrition

When we fuel up with the right foods, we have the energy we need for the day. Learn how to make the right choices to feel your best.

  • Understanding the Food Pyramid

Did you know that half the food on your plate should be fruits and vegetables? This guide explains why it’s so important to eat a variety of foods. It also introduces you to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate program and provides recommendations on the five food groups: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, and Dairy.

  • Eat the Rainbow

This series of short videos will show you how to bring more fresh fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. First we’ll learn about the variety of foods of all the colors of the rainbow. Then, we’ll discuss why a healthy diet with plenty of variety is key. Lastly, we’ll travel to a farmers market to explore fresh options that are in season.

  • Make Your Plate

Using the Healthy Eating Plate as a guide to create healthy, balanced meals — whether served at the table or packed in a lunch box.
