Junior League of Washington Announces the Cancellation of Tossed & Found 2020

The Junior League of Washington (JLW) has decided to cancel its 2020 Tossed & Found sale, including our special event, Hoops & High Heels Preview Night.

This decision was made after significant discussion by the League’s Emergency Management Team. On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, DC Government declared both a state of emergency and a public health emergency as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the CDC has issued guidance around mitigation strategies for communities. After extensive discussions with various advisors, in light of CDC and DC Health guidance, and given the complexity of the event JLW leadership felt this was the responsible course of action. The health and safety of JLW members, as well as the community we serve, is our top priority.

JLW will continue to assess future events on a case-by-case basis. Thanks to the stewardship of JLW leaders present and past, our organization is in a strong financial position. While it is not ideal to have to cancel a fundraiser, doing so will not affect the League’s ability to continue to support our DC community or train our volunteers.

Hoops & High Heels Preview Night Ticketholders

An email will be sent in the next week to all Hoops & High Heels Preview Night ticketholders, asking them to let us know which of the following three options they would like to select:

  • Exchange ticket(s) for ticket(s) to the Hoops & High Heels Preview Night in Spring 2021,
  • Donate the purchase price of the ticket(s) to the Junior League of Washington, or
  • Receive a refund for the ticket(s).

Even though participants won’t be able to bid in person, we are pleased to share that our Preview Night auction will continue, since that is fully run through the Handbid app. We are exploring ways to expand the offerings, as well as the bidding duration and will be providing additional information on how to participate soon.

Rummage Donations

The donations JLW members and the public made to our 2020 sale will still put to good use for our community and organization. JLW’s Tossed & Found team will work closely with our community partners, other local nonprofits, and neighbors in need to coordinate pickups of donated items. We also will be working to consign and still raise funds from some of the fabulous finds that were received. Finally, we will be working with our partners in the Junior Leagues of Baltimore, Richmond, and Northern Virginia to see if any items that we have on site could be used at their thrift stores or other programs.
