All women who value the Junior League of Washington’s (JLW) Mission are encouraged to join our League. To be eligible to join JLW as a New Member, you must meet the following criteria by the JLW Membership Application Deadline of March 15, 2021:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be a resident within the greater Washington, DC, area
Must have one active or sustaining member of JLW in good standing serve as a sponsor. If you do not currently know a JLW member, a sponsor will be assigned to you. A detailed application process is below. Please contact the Member Recruitment Committee with any additional questions or concerns.
HOW TO JOIN THE JLW?
STEP 1: BECOME FAMILIAR WITH JLW
Joining JLW as a New Member begins with becoming familiar with the League. Each fall, JLW offers informal “Getting to Know JLW” Open Houses. At these open houses, interested women meet JLW members, who share their experiences, offer information about JLW, and answer questions. While attending an Open House is not mandatory and you can submit an Applicant Interest Form without attending, participation is highly encouraged.
We hope to see you during one of our upcoming Open Houses! Note: a decision will be made at a time closer to the Open Houses regarding whether the events will be set at a particular attendee count or solely virtual, following CDC and local guidelines in light of the COVID-19 crisis.
STEP 2: SUBMIT OUR ONLINE APPLICANT INTEREST FORM
Once you are familiar with the membership process and requirements, you may create an account with JLW and submit the online Applicant Interest Form which will open on August 1, 2020. Click here to create your account. After creating your account, you will receive a confirmation email with the next steps and a link to the Applicant Interest Form. The Applicant Interest Form must be completed on, or before, December 10, 2020, at 11:59 p.m.
STEP 3: ATTEND A MANDATORY RECRUITMENT ORIENTATION SESSION AND SUBMIT APPLICATION
All women who meet the requirements set forth within the Applicant Interest Form will be notified and invited to attend a mandatory Recruitment Orientation Session, several of which are held in January, February, and March. Invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to eligible women on January 4, 2021.
Recruitment Orientation Sessions give prospective members the opportunity to learn more about JLW, and attendance is mandatory to continue the application process. For planning purposes, the 2021 Recruitment Orientation Sessions will be held on:
- Sunday, January 24 – 2:30 – 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, January 27 – 6:30 – 8 p.m.
- Tuesday, February 2 – 6:30 – 8 p.m.
- Friday, February 12 – 6:30 – 8 p.m.
- Saturday, March 13 – 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
NOTE: A decision will be made at a time closer to the Recruitment Orientation Sessions regarding whether the events will be set at a particular attendee count or solely virtual, following CDC and local guidelines in light of the COVID-19 crisis.
Once a prospective new member attends a Recruitment Orientation Session, they will receive another non-transferable link for the application and the $35 applicant processing fee that accompanies the application. The non-refundable fee is payable at the time the online application is filed. Women who submit an applicant processing fee but are not selected in the lottery will have the fee waived if they re-apply the following year. All applications must be completed on, or before, March 15, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. After all applications have been reviewed, the women will be placed into a lottery and will be notified of their status in early April 2021.
STEP 4: INVITATION TO JOIN THE JLW NEW MEMBER CLASS OF 2020-2021
JLW welcomes 250-300 new members every year. However, that means we are not always able to accommodate all women who are interested in joining each year. Every eligible candidate who submits each requirement on time will be entered into the lottery system to determine who will be invited to join JLW’s 2021-2022 New Member Class. All applicants will be notified of their status by the Member Recruitment Committee in early April 2021, and those accepted must pay new member dues and course fee (approximately $320) by May 1, 2021. There will be the option for dues payment plans and a small number of dues scholarships are available.
