Resolution Read

RESOLUTION READ
RRBookJLWIn honor of our Centennial, Junior League of Washington (JLW) volunteers have committed to purchasing and distributing 100,000 new books to children in the greater Washington, D.C. community as part of the RESOLUTION READ program.  RESOLUTION READ concentrates the JLW’s focus on Literacy into three key areas:  the importance of reading out loud to children; placing age-appropriate books in the homes of children; and providing more books to schools and libraries, with a large emphasis on children in Wards 5, 7, and 8 and ages 0-5th grade.  By addressing these three areas, the JLW will continue to make a lasting impact in the Washington, D.C. community by fostering a passion for books and reading where it otherwise might not exist.

The JLW is working to partner with several local non-profit organizations to select age-appropriate books and design reading guides that will supplement the books and aide comprehension.  Resolution Read book distributions kicked off in June 2012 by providing over 6,000 books to D.C. students at 11 elementary schools and organizations, in partnership with JLW Community Partners:  Literacy Lab, Horton’s Kids, Washington Middle School for Girls, Washington Jesuit Academy and Excel Academy.  Volunteers shared the excitement of new summer reading books with the children by reading aloud as the books were distributed.

Current partnership plans also include working with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) to deliver the 30,000 books that JLW volunteers will distribute during November, February, and May to 20 schools in Wards 5, 7, and 8 – gifting 5 books to each of 6,000 children.  In addition, the JLW's Targeted Grants application this year is open to organizations and schools with a need for book donations.  The application to receive a Targeted Grant can be found at http://www.jlw.org/?nd=grants_scholars.  The JLW is also planning to support current and new summer reading programs in order to help reduce the summer reading loss often seen in children living in the greater Washington, D.C. community.

By design, RESOLUTION READ is more than just giving out books.  JLW volunteers will also give individual attention to children when selecting books, help children write their name on their new books, read aloud to children, and offer a host of other small activities that will foster a passion for books and reading – a Resolution [to] Read among children where it otherwise might not exist.

If you know of an organization that may be interested in receiving books or have additional ideas on how the JLW can better support the greater Washington, D.C. community though our RESOLUTION READ 100,000 books project, please contact resolutionread@jlw.org.

In order to purchase and distribute 100,000 books, we need your help as soon as possible!  By working with many book distributors and local partners we are able to purchase high quality books at discounted prices (an average of $3 per book), allowing us to stretch your donation to make a larger impact in improving literacy in the DC Community.
